Obinna Obuteh Blog 1

The thought of this trip has been a bit nerve racking and has really clouded my mind. I like doing things that I think could help others, but in my mind I’m kind of hesitant, feel weird about it, and I’m generally not a person who gets “excited” about things. However, in accordance with most of my experiences with Bonner my expectations will probably be exceeded and I’ll end up having a great time. My mother has been to New Orleans before, but besides what we talked about in our FSP I really don’t know too much about New Orleans except for Mardi Gras, bourbon street, and Lil Wayne. Furthermore, I’m looking forward to painting because that can be very fun and drywalling because I have improperly attempted it before and it is kinda fun. I also want to see how New Orleans people react to football since their team is in the NFC championship game. In conclusion, as always I hope to learn a lot about myself, the local community, and the issues in our society through my service.

Going into this trip I am looking forward to developing stronger relationships with my Bonner Class. I’m looking forward to working with them on our SBP projects! I can’t wait to see the result of all of our hard work and determination. Prior to this trip, I learned in our FSP that FEMA underestimated the severity of the Hurricane Katrina that was headed towards NOLA, thereby sending only a quarter of available search and rescue teams to the region. Not only did they send a quarter of their available teams but they did not send any personnel to New Orleans until after the storm had passed. I hope while on the trip I’ll be able to gain understanding of how far New Orleans has come, years after Hurricane Katrina has passed, and how they have slowly been able to recover since. I’m looking forward to helping rebuild houses in the lower ninth ward with my fellow Bonner Community Scholars and others involved with SBP.

Sofia Cartagena Blog 2

These first few days have been really enjoyable for me. Not only have I spent time bonding with my fellow first years more than I have this past semester, I’ve also gotten to know some of the chaperones a bit better. The time spent painting the siding of the house, trimming baseboards for the floor, and conversing with everyone was truly amazing. I am excited to see the final product of the house that displays all of our hard work and determination. After going on a tour of the city, we witnessed how even after 13 years the city has yet to be rebuilt. Throughout my experience thus far I have learned how resilient the residents of NOLA truly are. By having this opportunity to help build a house for a person who has, for example, not been able to return to NOLA since Hurricane Katrina is an uplifting and unforgettable experience.

Alexandria Rudolph Blog 1

I have a few initial hopes and expectations for the New Orleans trip. First, I am excited to be able to help the communities that are still struggling there. I know that the service we are doing will help people regain their lives before Hurricane Katrina. Second, I hope to get closer to my fellow Bonner students. As the semester went on, I saw less of the Bonners as I got really busy with classes. I believe that working towards and accomplishing our goal for this trip will be bonding and will provide a closer relationship to everyone. Lastly, I expect the work to be hard but very fulfilling and satisfying. I don’t know a lot about New Orleans. I know the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the community and land. I also know a little of New Orleans rich history of music and the heavy French influences. I hope to see live music still around and some of the city’s everyday culture.
