This trip is something that I have been looking forward to since the beginning of the school year and I can not believe how fast time flew by. I have never been to New Orleans so I hope to get to see more of the area and get to learn its history. Also, one of my favorite shows, American Horror Story, filmed a season in New Orleans so I can’t wait to see some of the places in person. I have heard from many upper-class Bonners that the New Orleans trip was a great time to get closer to your Bonner class and learn more things about them. Thought out this trip, I not only hope to get to know my Bonner class more but I also look forward to learning more about the damage was done by Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina affected all areas of New Orleans such as Mid-City and the Lower 9th Ward which was affected the most. The Lower 9th Ward was once home to many people, however, the current number of people who live there is less than half because of the lack of money available to recover their homes. I live by the Jersey Shore which was affected badly by Hurricane Sandy and I was able to see the disaster left behind. Six years after the hurricane, the boardwalk and almost all of the houses have been restored. The reason why the majority of damages done by Sandy have been fixed is that the people who live on the Jersey Shore are in the upper class and have enough money to rebuild their homes and can still afford to live there. In contrast, the Lower 9th Ward is home to a large black community with lower incomes and can not afford to fix their homes. On this trip, I look forward to making an effort to help the New Orleans community and families by helping to build a home for a family.
